why group therapy?

our lives are lived in groups; of friends, coworkers, family, neighbors, culture, and society. therapy in groups can embolden us for a life lived in community. a process group can increase our understanding of ourselves, our emotions, and relationship dynamics and patterns impacting our lives. in group, members practice putting thoughts and feelings into words, explore here-and-now group dynamics, and share the emotionally significant experiences of their lives.

what is group like?

a process group happens from moment to moment. there is no structured agenda for each 75 minute session and is open for however group members inhabit the space. group members often share their lives and support each other, and also might disagree and face challenging feelings towards one another. a group therapist helps facilitate members putting such thoughts and feelings towards one another into words, often incorporating somatic awareness of how emotions feel in the body.

while group members often make strong and close connections in group, these connections stay inside the weekly confidential group space to contain therapeutic boundaries. group members might coincidentally encounter each other outside the therapy room but are asked to bring the encounter back to the other group members to process.

what is the time frame of group?

each group session lasts 75 minutes and occurs once a week. a weekly process group is meant for long-term therapeutic work towards relationship building with other group members. because of this, group members should expect to make a meaningful commitment to the group and expect to attend each week. absences do happen, but members are expected to prioritize their group commitment as much as possible.

new group members are asked to make a trial period commitment to the group for at least one month with the intention of a longer commitment. similar to individual therapy, members attend group anywhere from several months to several years.
